Wellesley was originally part of Dedham, Massachusetts, and was subsequently a part of Needham, Massachusetts called West Needham, Massachusetts. A local businessmen named Henry Durant founded Wellesley College in 1875 as a college for women along the shores of Lake Waban. Durant named the college to honor his next-door neighbor, Horatio Hollis Hunnewell, a wealthy businessman and town benefactor whose mansion was named "Wellesley" in commemoration of his wife, whose maiden name was Welles. Wellesley officially became a town in 1881.

Wellesley is known as "one of Americas loveliest suburban communities." With three Commuter Rail stops, and the Mass Pike and 129/95, Wellesley is a very desirable commuter locale and a draw for the affluent. According to Boston Magazine's yearly "Best Places To Live" Wellesley ranks first in the United States in percentage of adults who hold at least one college degree. The town also is also home to several office parks along its eastern border. Wellesley is bordered by Newton to the East, Weston to the North, Needham and Dover to the South, and Natick to the West.

A main attraction to the town is the two well-known and highly respected major colleges located within its boundaries, Wellesley College and Babson College. And the citizens of Wellesley place a high value on education with over 75% of its residents over the age of 25 having a bachelors degree.
