Located in Middlesex County and bordering both Norfolk and Worcester Counties, Holliston is a suburban community that retains its quaint New England charm while offering the best in suburban amenities.
Originally part of Sherborn and settled by Massachusetts Bay Puritans, the town of Holliston was incorporated in 1724. The name was to honor Thomas Hollis, a benefactor of Harvard College. And early account of the town calls it “the quintessential New England village” and the charm of the place is still retained from its quaint Town Center, Carnegie public library, white-steepled churches, and numerous antique colonial, Greek revival, and Victorian homes.
Holliston's Mudville neighborhood claims to be the location of the 1888 Ernest Lawrence Thayer poem, "Casey at the Bat," maintaining an ongoing, good-natured rivalry with Stockton, CA which makes the same claim. Holliston is also the location of the legendary Balancing Rock, a five ton rock precariously balanced on a granite ledge, which was mentioned in George Washington’s diary. Washington himself attempted to push the rock off of its perch along with many of his men as they traveled from Boston to New York.
Holliston takes pride in its school system, which features a unique French immersion program, among other attractions. Schools include:
• Placentino Elementary School (Website)
• Miller Elementary School (Website)
• Adams Middle School (Website)
• Holliston High School (Website)
Shopping and antiquing in the town square are popular pastimes, as well as a visit to Patt’s Blueberry Farm. There are eleven area Parks, including Stoddard Park on Lake Winthrop, as well as the Pinecrest Golf Club. Holliston is also a hub for the arts, with many of the old industrial spaces on Water Street now in use as artists’ studios.
